Stem Cells
Expertise from the Oxford Stem Cell Institute
Stem cell biology is one of the most rapidly-developing
areas of the biomedical sciences and may one day lead
to breakthroughs in regenerative medicine for the
treatment of chronic and degenerative diseases. The
Oxford Stem Cell Institute brings together expertise throughout the University to help realise these goals.
The Institute fosters and facilitates collaboration and joint projects among 34 laboratories from 17 Oxford University Departments. The labs are clustered into the following broad areas of research endeavour:
- Embryonic stem cells
- Hematopoietic stem cells
- Neural stem cells
- Adult stem cells and induced pluripotency
- Cancer stem cells
- Regenerative medicine
- Related technologies including medicinal chemistry and engineering
The Institute conducts primary and translational research and is also actively involved in the following areas:
- Training of young scientists, both graduate and post-doctoral
- Policy development, both national and international
- Promotion of the public understanding of science through courses, outreach to schools and interaction with the media.
- Consultancy for the biotechnology industry
