UKPDS Risk Engine - Isis Project No 1296
Oxford software to assess risk for individuals with type 2 diabetes
The Oxford Software
The UKPDS Risk Engine is a type 2 diabetes specific risk calculator developed at the Diabetes Trials Unit in the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism. Risk calculations are based on 53,000 patient-years of data from the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study, which also provides an approximate 'margin of error' for each estimate.
The software provides risk estimates and 95% confidence intervals, in individuals with type 2 diabetes not known to have heart disease, for:
- Non-fatal and fatal coronary heart disease
- Fatal coronary heart disease
- Non-fatal and fatal stroke
- Fatal stroke.
These can be calculated for any given duration of type 2 diabetes based on current age, sex, ethnicity, smoking status, presence or absence of atrial fibrillation and levels of HbA1c, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol.
Applications
The UKPDS Risk Engine is intended primarily for use by health care professionals to assist in the management of people with type 2 diabetes. The UKPDS Risk Engine is not a replacement for formal medical assessment and should only be used by patients in consultation with their trained medical adviser. In addition, the UKPDS Risk Engine will be of particular value to health insurers, health service planners and service providers, as well as the pharmaceutical industry.
Software Status
The software is available for commercial and academic use in the form of a standalone application for Microsoft, Macintosh, Palm and Pocket PC platforms. An Excel worksheet version is available on Microsoft and Macintosh. The software is also available for incorporation in other software packages as an ActiveX module or as a Macintosh shared library.
