Technology Transfer from the University of Oxford

International Finance Index - Isis Project No 3576

A comprehensive and reliable quantitative macro-financial tool that measures the development of global financial activities.

MARKETING OPPORTUNITY

The significant increase in global mobility of financial firms drives the need for a robust, reliable and comprehensive tool to measure the development of financial activities in different parts of the world. Current surveys lack the means to evaluate competition and monitor the position, size and structure of these financial centres.

THE OXFORD INVENTION

The Oxford Invention proposes a novel method for calculating International Finance Index Series (FIS) that integrates 14 indices to capture basic, but fundamental dimensions of financial activity in different countries such as size, growth, intensity, diversity and internationalisation. These indices are based on reliable data that can be updated on a regular basis, are simpler to interpret and can be visualised in forms of graphs or maps (see figure).

Investment banks and financial conglomerates active in a wide range of financial markets can use the proposed FIS for:

  • Monitoring global stocks and flows
  • Analysing investment risks
  • Assisting investment decisions
  • Strategic planning
  • Checking health of financial activities
  • Guiding portfolio diversification
  • Allocating resources
  • Studying potential returns
