Commercial Opportunity in Dendrimers - Isis Project No 502
A novel synthetic procedure, for the preparation of a new range of dendrimer based products, from a new, simple, multi-functional molecule.
Marketing Opportunity
Dendrimers are a range of chemicals that are producing new, exciting
possibilities for materials across the spectrum of chemical products.
In general they are highly branched products that arise from reactive
sites, linking together in highly functionalised molecules. Linking
between similar molecules produces an increasing degree of branching
depending on the functionality of the starting material. The level of
functionality can lead to varying degrees of branching, so providing
altered properties.
Highly branched structures, if controllable, can solve many problems
ranging from prevention of precipitation to controlled polymeric cross-linking.
The challenge to further development of this area is identification of a new method to obtain dendrimers, which is simple and inexpensive.
The Oxford Invention
![]() |
The Oxford Invention consists of a method of making a new range of dendrimers derived from a new simple multi-functional molecule. The starting material is readily produced and has useful hydroxyl functionality. Inherent to the starting material is a very high degree of branching - this results in products being obtained that have residual hydroxyl groups. These residual hydroxyl groups can:
- Be reacted further
- Undergo cross linking
- Promote water solubility
Patent Status
This work is the subject of patent application, and Isis would like to talk to companies interested in developing the commercial opportunity that this represents. Please contact the Isis Project Manager to discuss this further.
