Supports and delivery systems are used to control the overall performance of a range of catalysts. These include catalysts to promote the combustion of particles.
Marketing Opportunity
The manufacture of high performance catalysts is a complex process because performance depends not only on the chemical composition of the active catalytic centre itself. It also depends critically on the precise local structure at the catalytic centre and on the packaging technology used to support or deliver the catalyst to its operating environment. The market for new or improved catalysts is large, and platform-manufacturing technologies that allow careful control of supports and the structure of catalytic centres are much sought after.
For instance, when materials that contain carbon are burnt the chemical combustion is never 100% efficient. Transition metal based catalysts can be used to promote combustion, reduce combustion temperature, improve efficiency, and in turn reduce unwanted emissions. Ensuring that catalyst materials have the optimum bulk physical and chemical properties, as well as the optimum local structure at the catalytic sites can result in further enhancements.
The Invention
The innovation is a new manufacturing method for controlling the structure of catalysts, where polymers of specific types are used to control the bulk material and chemical properties as well as the local structure at the active catalytic sites. This process has already been used to manufacture active catalysts that promote the combustion of hydrocarbons. The process lends itself to commercial scale up having been developed by a global technology based business.
Materials produced to date have the following range of useful properties:
- catalysts with high levels of performance (active, specific)
- materials that are extremely stable as components of complex formulations
- materials that can be stored in a highly concentrated form for extended periods of time.
Patent Status
The Global Technology Based Business owns a family of patents protecting this technology. They have the capacity to manufacturer the materials at pilot scale and in larger manufacturing quantities. The company has rights to grant licenses to the associated patent portfolio, and the resources to provide technical support to licensees. Isis Innovation is working with this Global Technology Based Business to identify new applications and partners/licensees.
