Marketing Opportunity
Exposure to the elements can have consequences for both appearance and safety. For example, over a period of time exterior surfaces and fixtures can accumulate dirt that is costly to remove, and condensation or the accumulation of water droplets on windscreens or mirrors can obscure vision and endanger road users.
The Invention
TOTO Frontier Research has rights to photocatalysts that can be applied as a coating to any surface and absorb ultraviolet light from ambient sunlight. This absorption results in changes to the physical and chemical properties of the coated surface.

The commercial applications of the technology are diverse including:
- self-cleaning coatings for construction materials including sidings or road furniture,
- treatments for performance fabrics such as sail cloths or outdoor garments, or,
- anti-fog coatings for architectural glass, camera lenses or vehicle mirrors.
Other proven applications of the technology include use as antimicrobial coatings and in air purification, making use of the ability of photocatalyst coatings to stimulate chemical breakdown.
Patent Status
TOTO (a major Japanese sanitary ware company) owns a family of more than 800 granted patents and patent applications which protect the technology and applications. TOTO Frontier Research Ltd (a subsidiary) has exclusive rights to grant licenses under the patent portfolio and worldwide there are more than 80 active licensees. Isis Innovation is working with TOTO Frontier Research to identify new applications and find further commercial partners/licensees.
