Pelvic Binder to Save Lives in Hospital Emergency Departments - Isis Project No 78201

A new design of Pelvic Binder (BRIM) has been developed by doctors at UKM in response to a pressing need for a practical and affordable device.
Marketing Opportunity
A Pelvic Binder is used to reduce internal bleeding when treating victims of trauma, typically caused by a road traffic accident or a fall from a great height. If this internal bleeding caused by fracture of the bones in the pelvis is not reduced, the victim can die quickly from this invisible blood loss. A Pelvic Binder is used to support the pelvic region by pushing the broken bones back together.
There are existing Pelvic Binders and other pelvic stabilisation devices available, however these are expensive and have other practical disadvantages. Some require specialist trained personnel to use, and others are simply the wrong size.
The UKM Invention
Specialists within the Department of Emergency Medicine at the UKM Medical Centre, seeing the need for a better Pelvic Binder took matters into their own hands and designed and had built a fully usable prototype device.

This device (know as a BRIM Pelvic Binder) has been used at the UKMMC since 2008, and has successfully been used to treat patients and is credited with saving a large number of lives.
Based upon the everyday experience of the inventors in treating life threatening injuries, the BRIM device has been designed with the following features:
- provides controlled pressure and compression to the pelvic area to maintain the integrity of the pelvic structure quickly after injury
- a portable device that can be applied by non-specialist personnel, and adjustable to fit patients of different sizes
- it secures both the pelvic and lower limbs
- the device can remain in place at the hospital whilst treatments are conducted, maintaining constant control of the pelvic region
- the device is transparent to x-rays so it can remain in place during medical imaging procedures
- the device is designed to be reusable (most devices available are single use devices), made of tough materials and simple to sterilise
- is manufactured at an affordable cost to maximise it’s uptake across the country
Patent Status
Several features of the BRIM Pelvic Binder have been protected with patents filed in Malaysia, and other aspects have been protected by the means of registered designs. The design of the BRIM Pelvic Binder is currently being refined as the inventors consult with other experts. Discussions have taken place with manufacturers, and early prototypes have been exhibited.
The team involved in this project would be interested in talking to potential users who would like to view the prototype device, and also distributors able to take this product to other markets in the region outside of Malaysia. For further information, please contact us using the link below.
