Health Outcome Questionnaires

Introduction

The purpose of the vast majority of medical interventions is to maintain or improve patient functioning and well-being and consequently have a positive impact upon the quality of life of the individual. Despite the obvious patient-centric perspective to the assessment of well-being the medical profession has not traditionally undertaken systematic evaluation of patient based reports, relying on questions such as, how does the patient feel or asking them to describe symptoms. However, clinicians and medical researchers are now well aware that they must measure quality of life alongside lab data. For this reason Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are increasingly being used to quantify the quality of life of the patient as part of the medical evaluation.

Isis Innovation has a portfolio of  PROMs developed within the Department of Public Health at Oxford University. The Health Outcomes portfolio from Isis is made up of condition specific questionnaires aimed at assessing the Quality of Life of patients being treated for Hip and Knee replacements, Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neurone Disease.  Condition specific PROMs address issues of particular importance to the target patient group and are more sensitive to changes in the patient’s clinical status than more generic health outcome / quality of life questionnaires.

Users of Oxford’s Health Outcome Questionnaires generally fall into two categories:

  1. pharmaceutical companies (including Contract Research Organisations, or CRO’s) assessing the efficacy of the drugs they are trialling;
  2. healthcare providers who require patient perspective tools (commonly referred to as Patient Reported Outcome Measures, or PROMs) for ensuring treatments are delivering health benefits to patients.

For healthcare providers the portfolio of Health Outcome Questionnaires from Isis provides the tools to capture independent patient feedback so as:

  • to ensure that hospitals are truly focussed on patient care
  • to provide an early warning governance tool
  • to provide variance data to the pathway of care
  • to effectively capture data added to clinical performance appraisal
