AstraZeneca Option Agreement
Isis Innovation has recently signed an Option Agreement with AstraZeneca in the area of pharmacogenomics. The agreement gives AstraZeneca the right to evaluate MMP-9 gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for use in clinical assays for diagnosis, monitoring and patient stratification of cardiovascular disease.
Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in the degredation of extracellular matrix proteins. Abnormal MMP activity is associated with inflammatory disease, including cancer, arthritis and heart disease.
The research leading to this invention was conducted at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics by Dr BaiPing Zhang, Dr Shu Ye and Dr Adriano Henney and has been funded by the British Heart Foundation. Isis Innovaton filed a patent application on the invention in May 1998 designating Europe, Australia, Canada, Japan and the US.
