The Isis Outcomes Team
PRO Development Team
The design, development, testing and validation of the Oxford PROs has been led by a world-class team of health services and PRO professionals, clinicians and surgical consultants. The clinicians that work with our PRO developers enjoy international reputations in their area of expertise. This group’s considerable expertise in orthopaedic surgery, neurological disorders, women’s and children’s health has led to the development of several internationally-recognized PROs.
Professor Crispin Jenkinson
Crispin Jenkinson is Professor of Health Services Research and Director of the Health Services Research Unit in the Department of Public Health and a Senior Research Fellow at Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford. He graduated from Bedford College, University of London, before coming to Oxford where he gained an M.Sc. in psychology and completed a D.Phil. researching the psychological impact of long-term illness.
Crispin has written and edited a number of books as well as having published over 130 peer reviewed papers. His research interests include health status measurement, the evaluation of patient experiences of medical care, and methodology. This work has led to the development of several internationally recognized PRO measures including the Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Questionnaire (ALSAQ), and the Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP).
Professor Ray Fitzpatrick
Ray Fitzpatrick is Professor of Public Health and Primary Care in the Division of Public Health and Primary Health Care and a Fellow of Nuffield College, University of Oxford. He is chair of an NHS R&D Academic Unit in Oxford and directs a programme for the UK Government Department of Health which provides analysis, reviews and advice to the NHS on PRO measures.
Ray's research focuses on evaluation of health services and treatments, particularly interventions for chronic diseases. For example, he collaborates with colleagues in Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in a number of trials of alternative forms of surgery and is currently completing a study of health service experiences and outcomes of individuals with long term neurological conditions.
Ray is part of the world-class team that developed the Oxford orthopaedic patient-reported outcome measures, namely the Oxford Hip, Knee, Shoulder and Elbow scores, and the Oxford shoulder instability score. Ray is also a co-developer of the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire – the PDQ. Ray was elected to Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2008.
Dr Jill Dawson
Jill Dawson is a Senior Research Scientist in the Health Services Research Unit at the University of Oxford and a Visiting Professor at Oxford Brookes University. Jill initially had a nursing career, before completing an MA in Human Sciences (University of Oxford) followed by an MSc in Medical Sociology and Social Research Methods as applied to medicine (London University).
Jill's early research focused on prospective surveys of use of health care services in relation to HIV infection. This culminated in a doctorate in 1993. Since 1993, Jill’s research interests have focused on health status measurement and methodology – particularly in the context of orthopaedic outcomes. This work has included the development of a number of PRO measures, namely the Oxford Hip, Knee, Shoulder and Elbow scores; and the Oxford shoulder instability score. This work continues to involve collaborations with a number of consultant surgeons and other researchers at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences.
Dr Chris Morris
Chris Morris is a Senior Research Fellow in Child Health at Peninsula Medical School in Exeter. He runs the Cerebra Research Unit which operates a wide-ranging programme of childhood disability research with the aim of improving the health and wellbeing of disabled children. Chris is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Public Health, a Research Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford and Honorary Principal Orthotist at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, University of Oxford.
After working clinically as an orthotist for more than 10 years, Chris began his academic career in Oxford by completing the part-time MSc in Evidence based Health Care in 2001 and was awarded a DPhil in 2006. Chris’ postdoctoral research, funded by the MRC, involved the development of the Oxford Ankle Foot Questionnaire for Children (OxAFQ-C).
Chris's current research includes addressing measurement issues in childhood disability, qualitative research with children and the appraisal and use of PRO measures. Chris is a member of the Editorial Board of Mac Keith Press and an Associate Editor for Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology.
Dr Georgina Jones
Georgina Jones is a senior lecturer in social science at the University of Sheffield. Previously she worked for 3 years as a post-graduate research assistant in the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Health Services Research Unit at the University of Oxford. Here she undertook a D.Phil. in the measurement of health-related quality of life in women with endometriosis and developed a new psychometric tool, the Endometriosis Health Profile PRO (EHP), to measure the impact this condition has upon the well-being of women with the condition.
Since then Georgina's research interests have extended to include quality of life measurement and instrument development and validation for women with other benign (in particular, polycystic ovary syndrome and pelvic floor disorders) and malignant gynaecological conditions.
Dr David Morley
David Morley currently holds posts in the Department of Public Health, University of Oxford and the Open University where he is an Associate Lecturer. He graduated from the University of Buckingham prior to gaining an MSc and PhD from the Institute of Neurology, University College London. His doctoral research focused on the impact of neurological illness on the offspring of affected individuals.
David has significant research interests in outcomes measurement and has developed and contributed to a number of measures, including the Parental Illness Impact Scale (PIIS-R) and the Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome Quality of Life Scale (GTS-QOL). He has also recently undertaken a preliminary validation of the Self Report Barthel Index (SRBI) in people with Parkinson’s Disease.
The scientific team has been supported by several world-leading clinicians in the design, development, testing and validation of the Oxford PROs, including:

Andrew is the founder director of the NIHR musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit whose remit is to translate new scientific discoveries into effective treatments.
Andrew's research interests are in the genetic basis of osteoarthritis and degenerative tendon conditions of the shoulder. He also researches more effective methods of assessing outcome following orthopaedic surgery and played a crucial role in supporting the design, testing and validation of the Oxford orthopaedic PROs.
Andrew was awarded the Robert Jones Gold Medal by the British Orthopaedic Association in 2001. In 2002 he founded the Botnar Research Centre, the Oxford University Institute of Musculoskeletal Sciences, which houses 100 scientists.
