Patient Reported Outcomes from the University of Oxford

New Endometriosis Health profile (EHP) Available from Isis Outcomes

12 April 2010

A new health outcomes questionnaire has been developed by the University of Oxford's Department of Public Health specifically for the measurement of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of women with endometriosis. Endometriosis is one of the most common chronic gynaecological conditions and  typically affects women of reproductive age. Endometriosis has been reported as having a prevalence as high as 10%1.

The new EHP Patient Reported Outcome (PRO) measure was developed and validated at Oxford by PRO development experts (Professor Crispin Jenkinson and Dr Georgina Jones) in collaboration with Mr Stephen Kennedy who enjoys an international reputation in the clinical research of endometriosis. Stephen is Head of Department and Clinical Reader in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Oxford. He is also an Honorary Consultant Gynaecologist at The Women's Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and trustee of the World Endometriosis Research Foundation.

Development of the EHP was funded by a pharmaceutical company that is already deploying the EHP in its clinical trials as an end-point measure. Other pharmaceutical companies have already followed suit and the EHP is now deployed in a number of drug development clinical trials under licence from Isis.

The EHP is available in the long-form core EHP-30 (30 items) and the short form EHP-5. The EHP has 5 scales of Pain, Control and Powerlessness, Emotional Well-being, Social Support and Self Image. In addition there are 6 separate modular PROs (total of 23 items) covering areas of Work, Relationship with children, Sexual relationship, Feelings about medical profession, Feelings about treatment and Feelings about infertility. The short-form EHP is simply a sub-set of the EHP-30, with one item taken from each of the 5 scales. Similarly a short form modular PRO is available, again combining one item from each of the 6 modules. Isis Outcomes can help customers identify the best version for their specific needs.

The EHP is available in a selection of languages, having undergone translation and linguistic validation using industry best practice methods. The EHP is supported by a comprehensive user manual available from Isis with the licence to use the EHP.

The EHP remains the only validated, patient-generated, disease-specific, PRO measure for endometriosis.

The EHP and other Oxford Health Outcomes questionnaires are available from Isis Outcomes.

Isis Outcomes is an activity within Technology Transfer at Isis Innovation Ltd, dedicated to the provision and support of the highest quality PROs for healthcare providers and the pharmaceutical industry.
