Technology Transfer from the University of Oxford

Wellcome Trust University Translation Awards: Internal (University) Application Procedures

The Wellcome Trust's application process for UTAs requires considerable interaction between researchers, their departments, Research Services (on behalf of the University) and Isis Innovation, for which plenty of time should be allowed in the preparation phase.

  1. University researchers interested in applying for University Technology Awards (UTAs) should contact Isis Innovation in the first instance, either directly (E linda.naylor@isis.ox.ac.uk or T: +44 (0) 1865 280910), or via Research Services (E anne.gray@admin.ox.ac.uk or T: +44 (0) 1865 270143).

  2. Isis will assign a Project Manager to assess the proposed project and to assist the researcher in the preparation of the proposal. The Isis Project Manager will open a new project file (if one does not already exist in connection with a technology already being commercialised by Isis) and will begin the process of IP due diligence in conjunction with Research Services.

  3. The application form should be completed by the researcher. The Isis Project Manager will assist in completing Questions 7, 11, 13 and 22 of the UTA application form.

  4. If the project involves an element of research to be carried out in University facilities, the researcher should work up research costs in conjunction with his/her departmental administrator (as per the preparation of research grant or contract costings), prepare the OG form and have the OG form signed off by the head of department to indicate that the department is content to house the research.

  5. When the Isis Project Manager and Head of Department are satisfied with the UTA application and costings, the application form and OG paperwork should be sent to Research Services for checking.

  6. When Research Services has approved any research costings and checked and signed the application form, it will send the paperwork to Isis for countersignature.

  7. The designated Isis Project Manager will then return the fully-signed application to the researcher for submission to the Wellcome Trust's Technology Transfer Division.

Please Note: Applications for UTAs will inevitably involve some degree of background checking to ascertain the ownership of intellectual property rights in the original research that is to be developed under the award scheme. For this reason, timescales for the internal checking procedures are not given, but both Isis and Research Services will endeavour to give as prompt a service as is possible.
